Roadtrip the US in a rented adapted/custom car
Hi all!I'm from Europe, and the top of my bucket list is to do a roadtrip on the west coast of the USA! I've been thinking about this a lot and I figured it's time to get serious about it. Biggest challenge; the car.
Now I know I can probably fly there and rent a car to do so but here's the catch; I have a mild form of cerebral palsy which bottom line means I can't use my right foot for driving. Not that big of an issue for me as I drive an automatic transmission with a extra (flip up/down) gaspedal in my car (so the layout is gas – brake – gas and the ability to flip either gas pedals up or down). This is a minor mechanical change to my car and I've got a mention of it in my papers so it's no trouble for insurance and what not.
This could all be very well different in the USA and the truth is I haven't a clue on how I would manage this. I guess there are people with the same 'disability' in the US and I'm wondering if there are places to rent a car/camper with such changes to facilitate people like me.
I'm not even sure this is the right place to ask but I'm hoping someone from the US can point me in any direction to find out more of this?
TL;DR: I want to rent a car in America but have some 'special needs' – do car rentals even facilitate things like this?
Edit: I finally found the right terms to google it myself 🙂 Found a couple of hits like this, and I think a "left foot accelerator" is the correct US term for what I'm looking for. Any experiences and/or tips are welcome!
